One thing that needs repeating: EU standards are minimum standards. That is, EU members are completely free to go beyond them - just not below them. So when Johnson & brexiters demand the “freedom to diverge” - they are, by definition, demanding the UK lowers its standards.

This is not anti EU, this is anti European and it is a very dangerous place to be right now. Twinning is massively important and a culture sharing, supported by both leave and Remain councils. It has nothing to do with the EU..
Imagine the French Govt goes ahead with a dodgy Ref. Strips citizens of rights. Ends FOM. Sells assets to chums, floods country with garbage food from the US. The riots would never stop.Cities would be in flames.The Élysée Palace would be burned down. The govt would capitulate.
